Ma defeats Tsai by over 790,000 votes

President Ma Ying-jeou yesterday defeated rivals Tsai Ing-wen and James Soong by sweeping more than 51 percent of the presidential vote.

The incumbent garnered more than 6.68 million votes to win another four-year term after a re-election campaign that relied heavily on its China-friendly platform.

Snow blankets highest peaks of Taiwan

China Daily News - Snow fell steadily on two of Taiwan's highest peaks throughout the morning on Monday, with an accumulation of up to 10 centimeters in one area by early afternoon, officials said.

The second snowfall of the year on Hehuanshan (Mount Hehuan) in central Taiwan began at around 8:10 a.m. Monday, according to police in Renai Village, Nantou County.

A look ahead at 2016 presidential hopefuls

Distraught by last Saturday's defeat, the Democratic Progressive Pary's (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen tendered her resignation as chairwoman, in accordance to the party's tradition. Who will be the next chairperson of the DPP is quickly becoming one of the most important issues to the party.

That power vacuum will most likely be filled by DPP legislative whip Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘), according to a senior DPP member, until the party holds the next chairperson election.

Tsai to remain chairwoman of DPP to March 1

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen pushed for her own immediate resignation, but agreed to stay on until March 1.

After losing to incumbent candidate Ma Ying-jeou on Saturday, Tsai announced her decision to step down as DPP leader, in compliance with party tradition.

An ad hoc session of the DPP's Central Standing Committee and Central Executive Committee accepted Tsai's resignation yesterday at noon.
